The Royals traded first baseman Carlos Santana and nearly $4.3 million to the Seattle Mariners for right-handers Wyatt Mills and William Fleming on Monday, clearing the way for Kansas City to bring up hot prospect Vinnie Pasquantino.

Pasquantino was not in the starting lineup against Texas on Monday night because of tight travel schedules, but Royals general manager J.J. Picollo and manager Mike Matheny expect his big bat to be in the lineup regularly.

The San Francisco Giants acquired Willie Calhoun on Thursday, sending outfielder Steven Duggar to Texas for the outfielder who was the main return for the Rangers when they traded pitcher Yu Darvish five years ago.

It will be a homecoming for Calhoun, and a move he requested after being sent to the minors on May 1. The 27-year-old was born in the East Bay city of Vallejo and attended Benicia High School.

"We wish Willie the best in his opportunity with San Francisco,'' Rangers president Jon Daniels said. "It's a fresh start for him, as well as being close to home.''

San Francisco also receives cash in the deal.

The Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday acquired outfielder Trayce Thompson from the Detroit Tigers for cash considerations.

The righty-hitting Thompson should help fill the void left by Mookie Betts, who landed on the injured list over the weekend due to a cracked rib.

The San Francisco Giants optioned struggling catcher Joey Bart to Triple-A Sacramento and acquired catcher Austin Wynns from the Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday.

Bart, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2008 draft, is hitting just .156 and has an OPS of .596 with 49 strikeouts in 108 plate appearances in his first chance to take over for former MVP and seven-time All-Star Buster Posey.

"We still think Joey is an everyday catcher," Giants president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi told reporters, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. "In the broader scheme of things, we thought it made sense to get him a little bit of a reset. We're very open to the notion that at-bats at Triple-A out of the spotlight can help get a guy on track."

Ryan Borucki has been traded by the Blue Jays to Mariners for Tyler Keenan

Borucki, who was recently designated for assignment, had been with the organization for a decade after being drafted in 2012. The lefty had pitched in parts of five MLB seasons with the Blue Jays, but he opened the season with a 9.95 ERA in '22 prior to the DFA. 

In Keenan, the Blue Jays add a 23-year-old who plays both corners of the infield. Keenan was a fourth-round pick in the 2020 Draft and was with Seattle’s High-A affiliate, where he opened the season hitting .250 with three home runs and a .740 OPS over 25 games.

The Kansas City Royals have acquired Albert Abreu from the Texas Rangers in exchange for minor league right-hander Yohanse Morel.

Texas had designated Abreu for assignment earlier this week.

Abreu, 26, had a 3.12 ERA over seven relief appearances for the Rangers after being acquired from the New York Yankees just before the season.
